The very nature of the activities connected with these conclusions indicates the existence of will. Even in our own daily activities and in the activities of those around us, we can see that the will to accomplish a particular achievement always precedes the accomplishment of the achievement itself. If you want to build a house, for example, you must first have the will to do so. Unless you have the actual will to build the house, there is no question of the house being built. To accomplish any task, large or small, you must have the willpower to do it. Organization cannot take place unless the will to organize is there. Enforcement of laws or principles can also not take place unless there first exists the will to establish and enforce those laws.
An artist cannot create a beautiful painting unless he wills to do it, nor can a sculptor who is devoid of will create or mold a beautiful statue.
Sometimes a girl will go on a diet because she considers herself to be overweight. Often, however, the will to lose weight is not very strong, and she may not stick to her diet. Similarly, a person who knows he should not smoke but who cannot stop can often be heard to say, “I’d like to quit smoking, but I just don’t have the willpower.” Will, then, is a necessary factor in the achievement of goals or the accomplishment of activities.
On a larger scale, we can understand that behind the creation of the universe there exists a will. Due to the existence of this will, the universe has been created, and is being controlled and maintained in an organized and harmonious fashion. The laws of nature are not accidental; they are the result of will. Just as a person in a particular country may have the will to introduce and establish a new law, similarly, the Supreme Will is responsible for the laws of nature.
Sometimes a person is still addicted to cigarette smoking or meat-eating. If he follows the process of bhakti yoga, then gradually he will be able to give up such habits. It is a question of tasting a higher taste. If a person engages in the process of bhakti yoga, he will gradually begin to taste the higher spiritual happiness, and he will be able to give up all vices naturally.
